Offerings – Are They Always to be Perfect?

Let me first start by saying, I am a student of the Torah. But I am, by no means, an expert in any way.  I have been reading Torah for six years or so and do not have all of it figured out. Period. So, everything I write or say, you need to study out for yourself. Be a Berean. I am reading the Torah daily again and this week’s parsha is Emor. I have read Emor at least six other times… but, as always, I found something this week that I have never seen before… and is the point of this post.. This verse. Leviticus 22:23. Where has this verse been hiding the last six years?  Wow… is this a contradiction? Does an offering always have to be perfect? Let’s dive in and see what we can learn here.

First let’s get the various translations of this verse.

(Bishops) A bullocke or a sheepe that hath any member superfluous or lackyng, mayest thou offer for a freewyll offering: but for a vowe it shall not be accepted.

(Geneva) Yet a bullocke, or a sheepe that hath any member superfluous, or lacking, such mayest thou present for a free offring, but for a vowe it shall not be accepted.

(KJV-1611) Either a bullocke, or a lambe that hath any thing superfluous or lacking in his parts, that mayest thou offer for a free will offring: but for a vow it shal not be accepted.

(KJV) Either a bullock or a lamb that hath any thing superfluous or lacking in his parts, that mayest thou offer for a freewill offering; but for a vow it shall not be accepted.

(The Scriptures 1998+) ‘As for a bull or a lamb that has any limb deformed or dwarfed you do prepare as a voluntary offering, but for a vow it is not accepted.

(NET) As for an ox48 or a sheep with a limb too long or stunted,49 you may present it as a freewill offering, but it will not be acceptable for a votiveoffering.50

(ASV) Either a bullock or a lamb that hath anything superfluous or lacking in his parts, that mayest thou offer for a freewill-offering; but for a vow it shall not be accepted.

(ESV) You may present a bull or a lamb that has a part too long or too short for a freewill offering, but for a vow offering it cannot be accepted.

(YLT) `As to an ox or a sheep enlarged or dwarfed–a willing-offering ye do make it, but for a vow it is not pleasing.

(LBP) A bullock or a lamb which has the ear or the tail cut off you may offer for a freewill offering; but for a vow it shall not be accepted.

What I gather from these verses is that indeed there is an offering that can be less than perfect… a freewill offering. But emphasis is placed always on the fact that it is not allowed for a vow. The difference is apparently very important.

What is a vow offering?

Gesenius is my go-to resource usually and he defines it as:

A vow is a promise to God.

What is a freewill offering?

Again, here is Gesenius’ definition:

Freewill is voluntary.

As I study this out, both of these offerings are Peace Offerings. In researching Peace offering, I read that they are unique because it is the only one that provides for a portion of the sacrifice to go to the person offering it. (How cool is that?) Another interesting aspect about the peace offering was that it was placed on top of the burnt offering (Leviticus. 3:5 and Leviticus 6:12).

It appears that Vow offerings were offered only after the vow had been fulfilled. This offering was not given to lure God into helping… it was actually to thank Him!

Jdg 11:30 And Jephthah vowed a vow to the LORD, and said, If thou wilt surely deliver the children of Ammon into my hands,
Jdg 11:31 Then whosoever comes forth of the door of my house to meet me when I return in peace from the children of Ammon shall be the LORD’S, and I will offer him up for a burnt offering.

Vows were voluntary (freewill also), but once they were made, they became obligatory to complete.

Deu 23:21  When you shall vow a vow to the LORD your God, you shall not be slack to pay it; for the LORD your God will surely require it of you; and it would be a sin in you.

The freewill offering (or voluntary offering) seems to be one that is spontaneous in nature and expresses thankfulness to God. As we see in Gesenius’ definition above, the Hebrew word actually means spontaneous. Being grateful and thankful. Isn’t it just like our God to make it easy to show that?

Tazria – Uncleanness. Is it Always Sinful?

As I read this week’s Torah portion, Tazria, I have found myself really pondering something.

Uncleanness.

And Sin.

This portion always brings this up for me. How can something biological Abba created in women to allow for the procreation of mankind be sinful? I’m not the first to ask this question, nor will I be the last.  But I will share my little bit of research into this topic.

This concept that a woman bringing life into the world through birth being sinful, in my very western way of thinking, does not seem very consistent with Hebrew thinking. How is it possible? I am a firm believer that translations can have a huge impact on our understanding of scripture, so the first place I search is to look at the various translations I use in eSword to see what language they use in translating Leviticus 12:6. Do they use “Sin Offering”?

(Brenton) And when the days of her purification shall have been fulfilled for a son or a daughter, she shall bring a lamb of a year old without blemish for a whole-burnt-offering, and a young pigeon or turtle-dove for a sin-offering to the door of the tabernacle of witness, to the priest.

(Bishops) And when the dayes of her purifiyng are out, whether it be for a sonne or for a daughter, she shall bryng a lambe of one yere olde for a burnt offeryng, and a young pigeon or a turtle doue for a sinne offeryng, vnto the doore of the tabernacle of the congregation, vnto the priest:

(ASV) And when the days of her purifying are fulfilled, for a son, or for a daughter, she shall bring a lamb a year old for a burnt-offering, and a young pigeon, or a turtle-dove, for a sin-offering, unto the door of the tent of meeting, unto the priest:

(ESV) “‘And when the days of her purifying are completed, whether for a son or for a daughter, she shall bring to the priest at the entrance of the tent of meeting a lamb a year old for a burnt offering, and a pigeon or a turtledove for a sin offering,

(YLT) `And in the fulness of the days of her cleansing for son or for daughter she doth bring in a lamb, a son of a year, for a burnt-offering, and a young pigeon or a turtle-dove for a sin-offering, unto the opening of the tent of meeting, unto the priest;

Yes. Every single one of them.  And what is more puzzling, several of these are not Eastern / Roman / Greek thinking translations. So, I go look up the Hebrew word H2403 – chatta’ath. Here is what Gesenius (Hebrew-Chaldee Lexicon) explained:

None of these gave me any relief from this inconsistent reading and apparent contradiction in thinking. So I read the Commentary in my translation of choice for this Torah cycle reading, The Five Books of Moses by Robert Alter. I find this commentary to be far more in sync with how I view this topic…

an offense offering. The present case is a strategic instance of why it is misleading to render the Hebrew hata’t, as almost all English Versions do, as “sin offering”. Surely the childbearing woman has done nothing that can be called a sin

I also pulled out another commentary that is quickly gaining my favor, The IVP Bible Background Commentary – Old Testament, and it essentially reads the same:

ceremonial uncleanness. Not all uncleanness was avoidable, and the cause of uncleanness was often something that would in no way be considered sinful… Cases like this make it clear that what has been called a “sin offering” is actually a purification offering. There is no sin here that needs atonement….

Now THIS makes sense. Purification. Finally after 7 years of studying, I have an understanding that harmonizes my understanding of Hebraic thinking and the language being used. And that brings me to a whole new level to ponder and study out.

If uncleanness does not always equate to sinful… where else is being “unclean” not sin… as we have been taught?  Lots to study out on that one.

There is more to discuss from this Torah portion, but I wanted to focus on this aspect because… hey, I’m a woman and a mom … so naturally this always makes me cringe when I read it.  I hope it has blessed you to see this scripture and verse from a different perspective and that it will cause you to dig into The Word and study it for yourself. My Thoughts on Torah Portion Bamidbar

I’m sharing my thoughts on Torah Portion Bamidbar (in Hebrew it means “In the wilderness” NOT “numbers”). This is our fifth reading cycle of Torah and I learn something new each time. I use a different translation each Torah cycle. This cycle I am using the  Schocken Bible: The Five Books of Moses. I have to tell you I DO NOT like the commentary in this translation at all, but I love the language of the Scriptures and verses… so I continue to use it and ignore the other. I personally like having a book to hold, but if you want to read it online, here is a pdf.

My thoughts on Bamidbar

This is the beginning of “Numbers” (which is NOT what Bamidbar means, as I stated above. Some folks have a really hard time reading this book of Torah because it is quite repetitive in places when it goes into excruciating detail. But what I sense is that this is demonstrating order and structure, not to mention scope and scale of the Israelites and mixed multitude that came out of Egypt.

One thing that caught my attention was that the boys were not counted as men until they were 20 (considered to be of age to go to battle). Of course, my oldest son heard that repeated 12 times (plus the totals), so thirteen times actually and I giggled and pointed it out to him each time to remind him! We have noticed it before, but the closer he gets to being considered grown in the United States, the more I appreciate this parsha! 🙂 And we see order and precision here with the numbering of the tribes, the order in which they will march, and even in their encampment around the Tent of Appointment.  We have heard over and over that chaos is not of God and here we see it clearly. He is extremely, painstakingly precise.

The Haftarah for Bamidbar is Hosea 2:1-22 in Hebraic Scriptures (1:10 – 2:20 in Western Translations). Rabbit trail for a moment… that amazes me. I can’t tell you how many Portions start with verse 2 or 3 of a chapter. It seems that when the Bible was divided up into chapters and verses, the Jewish people were not consulted… because they would never have broken up a Torah portion the way the chapters do.

So, back to the Haftarah… The first thing we see is that the children of Israel will be like the sands of the sea, cannot be measured or counted. One thing that needs to be remembered about Hebrew is that there were no vowels in the original Biblical Hebrew… those were added later. So the word for adulterous and idolatrous are the exact same. So is it any surprise that idolatry is treated as adultery?  I love the Hebrew language… there is so much just like this that is to be learned that just adds to the richness of the Scriptures and helps us truly understand the intent of the Words used! So Hosea is essentially about idolatrous (adulterous) Israel.  Amazing.

Hosea shows us that God will strip us of everything He needs to strip us of in order to get us to Teshuvah (repent and return to Him).

Hos 2:7  And she shall follow after her lovers, but she shall not overtake them; and she shall seek them, but shall not find them: then shall she say, I will go and return to my first husband; for then was it better with me than now.

One thing that will be terribly controversial and I’m sorry to even bring it up… but it is on my heart and is one of the reasons we don’t have anything to do with the Christian holidays…

Hos 2:10 And now will I discover her lewdness in the sight of her lovers, and none shall deliver her out of mine hand.
Hos 2:11 I will also cause all her mirth to cease, her feast days, her new moons, and her sabbaths, and all her solemn feasts.
Hos 2:12 And I will destroy her vines and her fig trees, whereof she hath said, These are my rewards that my lovers have given me: and I will make them a forest, and the beasts of the field shall eat them.
Hos 2:13 And I will visit upon her the days of Baalim, wherein she burned incense to them, and she decked herself with her earrings and her jewels, and she went after her lovers, and forgat me, saith the LORD.
Hos 2:14 Therefore, behold, I will allure her, and bring her into the wilderness, and speak comfortably unto her.
Hos 2:15 And I will give her her vineyards from thence, and the valley of Achor for a door of hope: and she shall sing there, as in the days of her youth, and as in the day when she came up out of the land of Egypt.

I cannot find in Scripture where the sabbath was changed … as a matter of fact, I see Yeshua (Jesus’ Hebrew name) referencing the Sabbath day…

Mat 24:20  But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the Sabbath day:

Mat 12:11  And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out?

If Yeshua was going to do away with the Sabbath or that it was irrelevant, wouldn’t He have said so in this discussion?  I agree with the scriptures that say the Sabbath was made for man not man for the Sabbath… it was a gift. An everlasting gift and one that is a sign that shows we are His…

Exo 31:13  Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the LORD that doth sanctify you.

Why do I mention the Sabbath in reference to the Feasts?  Because the Sabbath is His first feast. In the verse above they are HIS Sabbaths and the same language is for His feasts. For the life of me, I don’t understand why Christians are so willing to keep these holidays that are not in Scripture… yet will dismiss the Feasts that clearly the New Testament believers were still keeping.

I don’t mean to be ugly or demeaning, I just want you to pray about this and really study His word.  Study scriptures and then study History. See who changed the Feasts and the Sabbath (I’ll give you a hint… Constantine did). I’ll leave you with this final thought and let you pray and study it out yourself…

Dan 7:25  And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.

Please ignore what you have been taught (it is all commentary, including what I am saying), and get into the Word and study this out. If it appears that parts of the New Testament contradict what I am saying, return to Yeshua’s words. NOTHING can contradict His words… so if an apostle appears to be… then we have to question our understanding of that apostle’s words.  Here is what Yeshua said:

Mat 5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
Mat 5:18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
Mat 5:19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Mat 5:20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.
Mat 5:21 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:
Mat 5:22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

So many want to stop at Matthew 5:17, but read the very next verse. Till HEAVEN and EARTH PASS… and then He goes on to expound on those very commandments that so many want to say are not required.  Please read the rest of Matthew 5 … and all of His words. Learn and understand what He said. He always pointed us back to the Father’s kingdom. Read the Rich Man and Lazarus parable….

Luk 16:1 And he said also unto his disciples, There was a certain rich man, which had a steward; and the same was accused unto him that he had wasted his goods.
Luk 16:2 And he called him, and said unto him, How is it that I hear this of thee? give an account of thy stewardship; for thou mayest be no longer steward.
Luk 16:3 Then the steward said within himself, What shall I do? for my lord taketh away from me the stewardship: I cannot dig; to beg I am ashamed.
Luk 16:4 I am resolved what to do, that, when I am put out of the stewardship, they may receive me into their houses.
Luk 16:5 So he called every one of his lord’s debtors unto him, and said unto the first, How much owest thou unto my lord?
Luk 16:6 And he said, An hundred measures of oil. And he said unto him, Take thy bill, and sit down quickly, and write fifty.
Luk 16:7 Then said he to another, And how much owest thou? And he said, An hundred measures of wheat. And he said unto him, Take thy bill, and write fourscore.
Luk 16:8 And the lord commended the unjust steward, because he had done wisely: for the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light.
Luk 16:9 And I say unto you, Make to yourselves friends of the mammon of unrighteousness; that, when ye fail, they may receive you into everlasting habitations.

Luk 16:25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.
Luk 16:26 And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.
Luk 16:27 Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father’s house:
Luk 16:28 For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.
Luk 16:29 Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.
Luk 16:30 And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.
Luk 16:31 And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.

You can’t simply dismiss Yeshua’s own words. This is in Luke… Yeshua is telling them Torah still applies. Please pray and study y’all. This is such an important topic and I could continue… but I’ll stop here.  I pray that my thoughts were a blessing to you and that it leads you to study His Word.

My Thoughts on Torah Portion Kedoshim

I’m sharing my thoughts and ponderings on Torah Portion Kedoshim (holy ones), for what they are worth. This is my 5th year reading the Torah Portions each Shabbat and I learn something new each time.I use a different translation each Torah cycle. This cycle I am using Shocken Bible. I have to tell you I DO NOT like the commentary part, but I love the language of the Scriptures. I like having a book to hold, but if you want to read it online, here is a pdf. This time I also pulled out my Onkelos translation. I love Onkelos, because if this translation changes the words of scripture, it tells you and why they changed them. I don’t like that they were changed at all, but I can assure you Every translation changes the words … just Onkelos tells you that he has.

My thoughts about Kedoshim

 

In Leviticus 19:2 we immediately see who is being spoken to… all the congregation. In my translation, it reads the entire community, but either way, it is all those that came out of Egypt, the mixed multitude, the children of Israel, all of them. And then… the words that should scare us all! Words that tell us how we should live…

Lev 19:2  “Speak to all the congregation of the children of Yisra’?l, and say to them, ‘Be set-apart, for I ???? your Elohim am set-apart. The Scriptures 1998

Lev 19:2  Speak unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say unto them: Ye shall be holy; for I the LORD your God am holy. JPS (Jewish Publication Society Bible)

Lev 19:2  Speak unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say unto them, Ye shall be holy: for I the LORD your God am holy.

And again in Leviticus 20:7:

Lev 20:7  Sanctify yourselves, therefore, and be holy; for I am the LORD your God.  Lev 20:8  and you shall guard My laws and do them. I am ????, who sets you apart. The Scriptures 1998

Lev 20:7 Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be ye holy; for I am the LORD your God. Lev 20:8 And keep ye My statutes, and do them: I am the LORD who sanctify you. JPS (Jewish Publication Society Bible)

Lev 20:7 Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be ye holy: for I am the LORD your God. Lev 20:8 And ye shall keep my statutes, and do them: I am the LORD which sanctify you.

The all say essentially the same thing… we should be set-apart, visibly, distinctly, vastly set-apart and walking a Holy lifestyle. How can we think that Yeshua born to be our Savior changes this in any way? That He came to set us free from living a Holy lifestyle? Really?  That is not logical nor is it scriptural… not in the least.

As we read through Chapters 19 and 20 that make up this portion, it reminds me of Yeshua restating how we are to live in Matthew 5 and 19. He didn’t release us from these laws… he explained them. The beginning of Leviticus 19:17 is almost exactly what Yeshua said…

Lev 19:17  You shall not hate your brother in your heart…

Mat 5:22  But I say to you, that whoever becomes angry with his brother for no reason, is guilty before the court: and whoever should say to his brother, Raca (which means, I spit on you) is guilty before the congregation; and whoever says to his brother, you are a nurse maid, is condemned to hell fire.

And again:

Lev 19:11  You shall not steal; you shall not deal falsely; neither shall you lie to one another.

Lev 19:12  You shall not swear by my name falsely and so profane the name of your God; I am the LORD.

Mat 5:33 Again you have heard it was said to them who were before you, that you shall not lie in your oaths, but entrust your oaths to the Lord.
Mat 5:34 But I say to you, never swear; neither by heaven, because it is God’s throne;

Mat 19:18  He said to him, Which ones? And Jesus said to him, You shall not kill; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness;

 

And yet again:

Lev 19:3  You must revere every man his father and his mother, and keep my commandments; for I am the LORD your God.

Lev 19:18  You shall not bear any enmity against the children of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself; I am the LORD.

Mat 19:19  Honor your father and your mother; and, Love your neighbor as yourself.

If you believe that Yeshua did away with the laws and ordinances of the “Old Testament” (Tanakh), I recommend you really pray about this and study the Word of God. Yeshua did not speak too many words for us to understand them. If you are confused by what APPEARS to be inconsistencies in the Brit Chadasha (New Testament), then I recommend you just read Yeshua’s words first. Understand them before you attempt to understand the disciples’ words. Because we know that the disciples could NOT speak against anything Yeshua said. So if you understand what Yeshua said and it appears another chapter and verse go against it…. you have to assume that your understanding of the later is wrong. Yeshua’s words were really easy to understand… there is no ambiguity in them.  Period. Pray about it and really seek wisdom (Scripture) for this answer.

When reading the commentary in Onkelos, I loved what Sforno said about this Torah portion… He essentially said this teaching embodied the concept that God created man “in His image and after His likeness” (Genesis 1:26)… that this Torah portion perfectly displays the requirement to emulate the ways of God.  Can I get an AMEN? That is it… and exactly what I felt as I was reading this.  Set-apart.  Are we a set-apart people, walking out His Words and emulating our Messiah, Yeshua?  If not, we need to examine our theology and our walk!

There is so much more to study in this little portion, but this is where I’ll stop. I pray this is a blessing to you!

Pesach 2014 with Recipes

Wow… We had one of the best Pesach dinners this year.  It was such a blessing!  We used a Messianic Passover Haggadah and my boys (husband included) not only read the English, but read and sang the Hebrew!  Oh My Goodness!  Really! Those that have been with me during our time with Beth Yeshua, you know I cry every single time I see non-Jewish believers singing the Torah portion and then this. THIS. It was so touching and beautiful!  I am so thankful my entire family is convinced of the Messianic path and that we walk out our faith!

I neglected to take pictures of each individual dish for the recipes, so please forgive me.  I wasn’t thinking about posting the recipes until today.  I’m still learning this blogging thing 🙂

One final note, we have so much fun hiding the Afikoman.  If you have children, don’t skip this part. My boys look forward to this all year long and ask David to hide matzah for the rest of this Feast.  

I pray your Pesach is a blessing! And remember that it is not so important to do it “right” but to have the desire to honor Abba. So, don’t worry too much about having everything just perfect.

My Thoughts on Torah Portion Acharei Mot

I am sharing my thoughts on Torah Portion Acharei Mot. This is my 5th year of reading the Torah Portions each Shabbat and I learn something new each time. Every Torah cycle, I use a different translation each Torah cycle.  This cycle I am using Shocken Bible.  I have to tell you I DO NOT like the commentary part, but I love the language of the Scriptures. I like having a bible to hold (write in and highlight 🙂 ), but if you want to read it online, here is a pdf.

Thoughts about Acharei Mot

I highly recommend you study Scriptures for yourself. Don’t take anyone’s words (including mine) or commentary as anything other than their opinion. You must know why you believe what you believe. Don’t leave your salvation up to somebody else’s interpretation!

The April 12th Messianic Torah portion was Acharei Mot (in Hebrew it means “after the death”).  The reading was Leviticus 16:1 – 18:30.

This was a pretty short Torah portion and I haven’t dug into the whole portion yet… but one thing that really stuck out to me was the Azazel goat, so I really want to focus on this aspect of the Torah Portion. Azazel is many times translated as the scapegoat and this is what it means. But for me, when I think of scapegoat, I think of (e)scapegoat… as in the goat gets away foot loose and fancy free and can be seen frolicking in the tulips in the valley later. Well… I was wrong, dead wrong as a matter of fact.  There is controversy over what exactly was the point of the “azazel” in azazel goat.  See there is supposedly a mountain, a demon, and a place all called azazel.  So, was this goat simply the goat that went to the location azazel, is that why it’s called the azazel goat?  Anyway, none of that really is the point … the point is this goat does not walk away … it is either thrown from a cliff (which some Jewish commentaries claim) or it is sent to return to its master (think demon here). But either way it has become the sin of Israel …. so it is certainly not frolicking in the tulips!

Let’s go a little deeper on azazel and then I want to talk about goats!  So, azazel (Strongs H5799) actually means:  stands in opposition to El. Read Gesenius‘s definition at Blue Letter Bible (it is in the middle of the page at the top… not the short and quick definition at the very top). So, if we really think about this, we have two goats: one is for God and one is not. Hot and cold. Again, we see there is no luke warm (there is not a third goat here). We see this hot / cold, good / evil, light / dark concept over and over again in Scripture. Jacob / Esau is a great example. We are warned about being lukewarm…

Rev 3:16  So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I am going to vomit you out of my mouth!

Now let’s get back to goat for a moment.  Let’s look up the meaning here in Leviticus 16:7

Lev 16:7  He must then take the two goats (H8163) and stand them before the LORD at the entrance of the Meeting Tent

I love using Blue Letter Bible, so here is the definition of H8163 … again read Gesenius.  the word is actually not goat, but “hairy”.  And Gesenius gives us three different definitions for hairy:

  1. hairy
  2. he-goat used for idolatrous worship
  3. wood-demons

This revelation could have lots of meanings!  One place in particular really had my mind racing… Esau. Do remember this description of him by Jacob?

Gen 27:11  And Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, Behold, Esau my brother is a hairy (H8163) man, and I am a smooth man:

Wow… is there more going on here than just he is “hairy”?  Not sure, but in Hebrew we know that names represent the character of whatever it is naming.  That would certainly give a vivid picture of Esau wouldn’t it?  And speaking of goats and hair… you can do some research on where they are mentioned in the bible here.  But I can tell you this deeper understanding sure gives a more vivid image for these verses!

Mat 25:32 All the nations will be assembled before him, and he will separate people one from another like a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.
Mat 25:33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

The only time we have two goats required and one used as the “scapegoat” is at the Day of Atonement / Yom Kippur. And speaking of Yom Kippur … did you catch verses 29-31?

Lev 16:29 Review of the Day of Atonement

“This is to be a perpetual statute for you. In the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you must humble yourselves and do no work of any kind, both the native citizen and the foreigner who resides in your midst,
Lev 16:30 for on this day atonement is to be made for you to cleanse you from all your sins; you must be clean before the LORD.

Lev 16:31  It is to be a Sabbath of complete rest for you, and you must humble yourselves. It is a perpetual statute.

So this feast is for both the native citizen and the foreigner and it is a “forever” law.

Yet, another reason we keep the Biblical feasts!

This was a short but meaty portion.  This is my 5th year of reading the Torah Portions each Shabbat and I learn something new each time.  I use a different translation each Torah cycle.  This cycle I am using Shocken Bible.  I have to tell you I DO NOT like the commentary part, but I love the language of the Scriptures. I highly recommend you study Scriptures for yourself. Don’t take anyone’s words, commentary as anything other than their opinion. The first thing I noticed is that the Priest determined if a person was unclean or clean {Leviticus 14:2}. The Priest didn’t ask what or if they had sinned… because in Hebraic thought, sickness is caused by sin. Think of an umbrella. You choose to either stay under the umbrella and stay dry (receive the blessings) or you choose to walk out from underneath the umbrella and get wet (receive the curses). Abba defines the walk and He has provided the umbrella (His Word).  We choose if we are going to receive the blessings (His path) or the curses (not on His path). Either way, it is our decision.

I’ll take it one step further. Not only did the Priest not ask you IF you sinned, he knew THE sin you committed to be Leprous. Who is the person that had Leprosy first in Scripture?  And what did they have Leprosy for?  Research it… A lesson is there to be dug up. If you do not have eSword, it is a fantastic way to really dig into and search scripture. And it will help you find the first person to have it.

Another aspect that completely struck me this time is there are seven days of purification but the unclean person is not fully clean until the 8th day and the events on the 8th day. So, we are being purified… but until we reach the eighth day and are deemed clean by the Priest, we are still in the process of being purified. This process of being purified is exactly like Aaron and his sons for the priesthood…. hmmm, think something is there?  Me too! On the 8th day, the unclean person is to be bring a he lamb as an Asham offering. The only time a “he lamb” is specified for the Asham offering is here for leprosy and for the Nazarite vow. There is more to this that I have not studied out… but think about it.  In both situations the requirement to shave is stated …  Both have HE lambs as their offering. Both are set apart (although for very different reasons)… but they are both identifiable by their “set apartness.”  Did you know the Levite Priests are shaven head to toe too {Numbers 8:6-7} when they begin their service?  Consecrated….  Born again…  covenant relationship; Priests, Nazarite vows and leprous people being brought back into “priestly” covenant…. there is more here to dig into.  I will be back to visit this study and soon!

Why did the Priest place blood and oil on the leprous person’s right ear, right thumb and right thumb toe?  Because the ear is for hearing, the thumb represents doing, and the toe represents walking.  So we are to hear, do and walk in His ways.  In other words, Shema!

Then we move into a home becoming Leprous. What do the green and red eruptions represent? Rabbinic and Hebraic thought is that this is Lashon Hora (evil speech). Tearing down a person (even if it is true). Lashon Hora leads to… a breaking or removal from the Almighty, which will lead to the attitude of loftiness resulting in rebelliousness and pride, followed by wrong attachments (false light)… so Teach Torah, His path!

For such a short Torah portion, there is so much to dig in.  Every time you see detail (numbers, cities, colors, names, etc.) there is something to study out there.  So you can see there is much, much more to study in this Torah portion.

My Thoughts on Torah Portion Vayikra

So we have finished Exodus and are moving into Leviticus, the third book of Torah. I got a shock right out of the gate this time.  It was in the footnotes of the Schoken Bible for Leviticus 1:3.

Leviticus 1:3 If an offering-up is his near-offering, from the herd, (then) male, wholly-sound, let him bring it near, to the entrance of the Tent of Appointment let him bring-it-near, as acceptance for him, before the presence of YHVH.

The footnote for this verse that led me to a revelation that sickened me!

Offering-up: Or “ascent-offering,” Others, “holocaust” to show that this sacrifice is to be wholly consumed by fire.

So the “holocaust”, the name of the slaughter of the Jews is supposed to be, based on the name and its meaning, a wholly burned sacrifice to God?  Yet Abba detests the idea of human sacrifice?  WHO named this event?  I am completely sickened with the AntiSemitism that is so prevalent. I am not in the least antisemetic, I actually identify with them, as being grafted into them… so I can’t be. But I’ve used this word my whole life… and it meant this.  Here is the etymology of the word … look it up for yourself. It’s like an onion. The more you peel back the more anti-semitic it is. And they got one last jab in with the naming of it. IT IS SICKENING!  I will be using Shoah (The Catastrophe) to reference that event from here on out.

I will get back to the parsha study… I just had to start there and share that. We have to be willing to research any and every thing to understand the meaning. That is a perfect example of a word that we THOUGHT we knew the meaning of, used it regularly… yet I had no idea what it really means.

One thing I take from this parsha is that sin is still sin even if we don’t realize it is sin. My proof texts from this Parsha: Leviticus 4:2, Leviticus 4:13, Leviticus 4:22, Leviticus 5:2-3, Leviticus 5:15-19. Unintentional Sin. I was discussing this parsha with a dear friend and I was talking about the sacrifices and how hard it is to read this section. I can’t imagine being the one that performed the sacrifice, as is evident that was done. It really hit me how much additional guilt I would feel knowing I was sacrificing an innocent for MY sin. Kathy pointed out that Teshuvah is indeed the key. If there is no sincere teshuvah, bringing an offering is worthless. ALL sacrifices were to draw near to Abba. Whatever they were for it was to bring you back to closeness with Abba.  I so agree.

There are some verses I want to point out… but read it for yourself and see if you get the same understanding I do.  I still have some questions too.

Question 1:  Why did they lean their hand on the head of the offering? Most commentaries will say it is part of the “ransom” and substitute for your life. I’m certainly not saying I disagree with that, I just sense there is much more going on.

In Leviticus 1:13, we see that all near-offerings are to be topped with salt.  That is a teaching in and of itself. Salt was part of the sealing of covenants in middle eastern ancient contracts.  Rico Cortes, of Wisdom in Torah, does a fantastic teaching on the Salt Covenant. Here is Part one and Part two

In Leviticus 1:14, I see Grits in scripture!  LOL!  Being a southern girl who loves her grits, I found that hilarious!  See why I love to read from different translations? I honestly get so much more out of scripture when I do!! Look up H1643… it is grits 🙂

Leviticus 2:14 Now if you bring-near a grain-gift of firstfruits to YHVH, budding-grain, parched with fire, grits of fresh-grain you are to bring-near as your grain-gift of firstfruits.

I also noticed that frankincense is used on the grain offering. Makes me want to learn more about the essential oils so many folks are using these days. 

Question 2: Why were female animals allowed for the shalom offering in Leviticus 3:1 and 3:6?

Something I noticed for the first time:  Leviticus 3:16, we see that all the fat is for YHWH. Which leads me to another question…

Question 3: Why?  I thought fat was bad for us?

Then I see in verse 17 that all blood and fat we are not to eat. And these all go to YHWH and are part of the sacrifices. Interesting! There is more going on here.. need to spend some time praying about and researching to really understand this one. Just know there is more here.

Finally, if a person robs and is found guilty of this sin… they are to repay what they robbed plus 1/5 (20%)to the person they robbed from PLUS their sin offering.

I absolutely love studying scripture.  I am always amazed at how little I know and how much I have to learn. I highly recommend you read it for yourself. Study it. Take the words apart and really figure out the meaning. As a society today we tend to skim and not read, certainly not study. I challenge you to change that in your family. Be Bereans. Study the Word and show your children how to.

Dear Father in the Make-Up Aisle

As beautiful as this letter is, it misses the point entirely!  This father, who obviously understands what the World wants from his precious daughter, misses how to protect those so innocent.

Here is my letter to this dad …

Dear father in the make-up aisle,

I don’t have girls, but I am the mom of three young boys. As I contemplate your letter to your daughter, I think about what a loving dad you are, who obviously wants to protect his daughter from the influence of the “world”.  And I, like you, worry about what the world wants and expects from my boys.  Our generation’s children.  

So, after being lured to the make-up aisle by a friend’s text, you sat there, studying the names of the products, scanning magazine images and felt complete disgust, as you mulled this freshly-discovered message these products are collectively and individually sending your daughter … as you should.  You recorded your thoughts…

… “Words have power, and the words on display in this aisle have a deep power. Words and phrases like:

Affordably gorgeous,

Infallible,

Flawless finish,

Brilliant strength,

Liquid power,

Go nude,

Age defying,

Instant age rewind,

Choose your dream,

Nearly naked, and

Natural beauty.”

Is this really your very first realization of the insane message being pulsed day in and day out to any person paying attention? There, on the floor of the make-up aisle? I have to ask… where have you been? Have you not noticed (maybe even purchased) one of those magazines that have been there in the checkout lane for decades? Those images of half-dressed women (and men) screaming “LOOK AT ME” from a half-dozen magazine covers? Those images parents are forced to deal with as we do everything in our power to divert our children’s attention while we wait to checkout? Oh, and while I’m thinking about it… have you not noticed you are standing among half-dressed women IN the malls, IN the restaurants, IN the stores, IN the airport, etc?  Did you miss them somehow? The world has been saying this to the children for a very long time…. “a pretty face and a body to enjoy” and how you must “look a certain way to have any worth or influence.” Where have you been dad? 

I know the answer, just like most of us know the answer … because most of us didn’t stop to think about this before we had children. Many of us not only didn’t think about it, we participated in it. Dressing like the World, thinking like the World, acting like the World. Well, guess what… If you walk it, talk it and act it, YOU ARE THE WORLD!  It was only after we had children did it start to sink in. Believe me. I.Get.It.

What is the answer?  It was there, in your letter the whole time, albeit not the answer you thought you penned.  

But words do have power and maybe, just maybe, the words of a father can begin to compete with the words of the world. Maybe a father’s words can deliver his daughter through this gauntlet of institutionalized shame and into a deep, unshakeable sense of her own worthiness and beauty.

You had the right answer, just the wrong  Father in mind. Our Father in Heaven does not use the words from the make-up aisle … as a matter of fact, they are pretty much the opposite from His Word. He focuses more on our walk, our action, our motivation, how we treat others, how we provide for the less fortunate. He discourages us from focusing so much on ourselves.

1 John 2:15-17 (CJB) 15 Do not love the world or the things of the world. If someone loves the world, then love for the Father is not in him;16 because all the things of the world — the desires of the old nature, the desires of the eyes, and the pretensions of life — are not from the Father but from the world. 17 And the world is passing away, along with its desires. But whoever does God’s will remains forever.

Titus 2:11-12 (CJB) 11 For God’s grace, which brings deliverance, has appeared to all people. 12 It teaches us to renounce godlessness and worldly pleasures, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives now, in this age;

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (CJB) 19 Or don’t you know that your body is a temple for the Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit) who lives inside you, whom you received from God? The fact is, you don’t belong to yourselves; 20 for you were bought at a price. So use your bodies to glorify God.

Romans 12:2 (CJB) 2 In other words, do not let yourselves be conformed to the standards of the ‘olam hazeh (the world). Instead, keep letting yourselves be transformed by the renewing of your minds; so that you will know what God wants and will agree that what he wants is good, satisfying and able to succeed.

Jeremiah 17:9-10 (CJB) 9 “The heart is more deceitful than anything else and mortally sick. Who can fathom it? 10 I, Adonai, search the heart; I test inner motivations; in order to give to everyone what his actions and conduct deserve.”

I would encourage you to seek His ways and path in teaching your children:

Deuteronomy 6:4 (CJB) “Sh’ma, Yisra’elAdonai Eloheinu, Adonai echad [Hear, Isra’el! Adonai our God, Adonai is one]; 5 and you are bibleto love Adonai your God with all your heart, all your being and all your resources. 6 These words, which I am ordering you today, are to be on your heart; 7 and you are to teach them carefully to your children. You are to talk about them when you sit at home, when you are traveling on the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them on your hand as a sign, put them at the front of a headband around your forehead, 9 and write them on the door-frames of your house and on your gates.

Proverbs 22:6 (CJB) 6 Train a child in the way he [should] go; and, even when old, he will not swerve from it.

As much as we love our children, once they reach adulthood, we cannot protect them from the world. It’s too late for us once they are “of age”. Only our children themselves and Abba can protect them at that point. We have to teach them to walk on His path and to desire His ways while they are still in our homes and throughout their childhood. It is our responsibility to help them learn to focus on His Kingdom with their whole hearts, minds and bodies.

I am so thankful that God placed this desire on my heart when my children were young. What a blessing to learn His ways and be able to teach them to my children. I pray you will feel this calling as well…

Thoughts as I read Yeshua by Dr. Ron Moseley Part Two

Eusebius documents the first “bishops” of the Church in Jerusalem and shares that the first FIFTEEN were Hebrew, believing Jews!!  Can you believe it? Further, did you know that in AD 117 Jerusalem was seized (and renamed) and Jews were BANNED from entering Jerusalem for one hundred years?  Think that might have prevented them from being the next group of bishops of the Church? So only after the believing Jews were no longer even in the city did Gentiles take that role. The exciled believing Jews that were “led by James and Simeon were still clinging tightly to the Judaic traditions while crouched at Pella.” (Baring Gould, Lost and Hostile History. “Schonfield’s History” 1936 page 35.

So, the first century Church is still absolutely a sect of Judaism, just as Paul said it was in Acts.

Act 28:17 And it came to pass, that after three days Paul called the chief of the Jews together: and when they were come together, he said unto them, Men and brethren, though I have committed nothing against the people, or customs of our fathers, yet was I delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans.
Act 28:18 Who, when they had examined me, would have let me go, because there was no cause of death in me.
Act 28:19 But when the Jews spake against it, I was constrained to appeal unto Caesar; not that I had ought to accuse my nation of.
Act 28:20 For this cause therefore have I called for you, to see you, and to speak with you: because that for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain.
Act 28:21 And they said unto him, We neither received letters out of Judaea concerning thee, neither any of the brethren that came shewed or spake any harm of thee.
Act 28:22 But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest: for as concerning this sect, we know that every where it is spoken against.
Act 28:23 And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into his lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets, from morning till evening.

There is just absolutely no doubt that Paul was Jewish and a Pharisee and a believer in Yeshua. THIS is exactly what convinced me that somehow the Church had lost its way … WAY back then to divorce its “Jewishness”. If “Messianic” Judaism was good enough for Yeshua and the Apostles… it’s good enough for me (it was not called Messianic back then, of course).  I have been walking the path of Messianic Judaism now for almost six years and have never looked back. Scripture finally makes sense. If you think anything in the New Testament contradicts anything in the Old Testament then you are calling God a liar, because He said He doesn’t change His mind… Yeshua said throughout His ministry that He came to do His Father’s will… The Bible was divided by a man… not by God. Even the titles of the Books, the Chapters, the verses… ALL of that was added by man. The only Scriptures the apostles had to teach and preach about Yeshua was the “Old Testament”.

Reading through Yeshua, there is a lot of information to digest… some information I knew some I didn’t know. The parts I didn’t know, I will not take Dr. Moseley’s word for it. Even the historical aspect, I am confirming as I go. The information about Eusebius at the beginning of this article is an example of me confirming what Dr. Moseley said… I had to research it to be sure it was accurate.

Note… I didn’t discuss every aspect of Chapter one. I have the entire chapter highlighted in my book, so I just picked out the pieces that I identified with and was either shocked by or so identified with that I wanted to share it with you!  I encourage you to read the Scriptures for yourself… We are told to be Bereans and study the Word and test everything you hear and read.
